Malaysia has a population of just over 28 million and over 11 percent of the country work in the tourism industry. Malaysia is the 35th ranked country in the international tourism market. Low tier tourism entry jobs have a starting salary of around 500 ringgit Malaysia, and at management entry level you may expect between 1500 to 3000 R.M. salary. Tourism employment opportunities are expected to rise by 6.6 percent yearly. The general cost of living in Malaysia is much lower than America and currently one U.S. dollar will exchange for three ringgit Malaysia.

The role of an associate holiday planner involves serving customers and providing holiday information. You would be expected to deal with customer enquiries, discuss and advise on hotel and resort booking, issue ticketing, plan and monitor daily customer check in and check out. Building customer relationships, issue management and dealing with customer complaints are skills you are expected to master. Travel companies will expect an advanced, higher or graduate diploma in tourism and experience within a customer service environment.

Consultants

Tour consultants do not need many tourism qualifications but must be fluent in several languages. Malay, Mandarin Chinese and English are widely spoken in Malaysia and most travel companies will expect you to be at least bi- lingual in these languages. Some knowledge of the inbound or outbound tour operation and use of a Chinese keyboard will be necessary.

To become a tour operations manager most companies will expect you to possess a diploma, an advanced diploma or a bachelor's degree in hospitality, tourism management or equivalent. You will be required to have a minimum of five years working experience in a travel agency or similar capacity, a knowledge and understanding of tour operators computer software systems and a command of English and Malay. Customer service and interpersonal skills are also an important requirement.
